Drusilla Chairs, Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, 1969

This is an interview with Drusilla Chairs, Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs (Provost). It was conducted by John Nicholson, Library Director in the Baltimore Room of the University of Baltimore Library on May 8, 1979 about her time and experience at the University of Baltimore.

Ms. Chairs talked about her memories about the challenges the administration was facing when she was hired in 1964 about the lack of policies and plan for university’s future. Mr. Pullen, the president at the time, started the accreditation process in 1965 and the school received accreditation in June 1971.  The Library was opened in 1966 as a part of the effort towards accreditation. Ms. Chairs believed 1968 was the turning point for the school when the board made Dr. Pullen the president and they realized the significance accreditation for the school’s survival.  One of the major contributions of Dr. Pullen was educating and training the university board. She also remembered the demonstrations of students in the middle of Charles Street protesting not having access to any parking space on the campus. At the end, she thought the university is moving in the right direction and would make it “even if a lot of people don’t want that”.
