Clifford C. James, Dean of School of Business, Industry and Managment, 1951

This is an interview with Clifford C. James, Dean of School of Business, Industry and Management during 1945-1969. It was conducted by Newsmagazine staffers Pat DiCarlo and Linda Walter in 1983 about his time and experience at the University of Baltimore.

Dean James cherished many memories of his tenure at UB, memories of programs, faculty, and students. He also recollected many challenges that he faced keeping the school alive especially during the World War II era. He started as a faculty in 1939 and later directed the Engineering Science, Management War Training Program, and the Pilot Training Program for the US Air Force during World War II. He became the dean of the School of Business, Industry and Management in 1945. The school offered bachelor’s degrees in Accounting, Business, Industrial Management, Finance, Marketing, and Transportation. By 1948, only 17 students had graduated. But, by 1955, the school enrolled more than 2,000 students. Dean James involvement in nationally specialized programs during War World II and Korean War, became a promoter of the university. Dean James hired Car Williams, financial editor of the Sun papers and General Edwin Warfeld, the owner of the Daily Record as adjunct faculty. As a result, the University received a great coverage in local newspapers.

Dean James retired in 1969 and was named Dean Emeritus later. He was awarded the honorary Doctor of Law degree by the University in 1980. He passed away in December, 1983, only a few weeks after this interview.
