Women's Association
A new and enterprising organization at the University,
the Women's Student Association will remember '56·'57
as its charter year. With the submission and acceptance of its statement of purposes and aims to and by the Student Council, the WSA gained recognition officially as a member of the Student Activities Association.
WSA is composed of women students from every divi·
sion of the University, with both day and evening
groups participating.
Theirs was one of the very first school groups to
activate its year's program, as they were on the scene
at freshman orientation to greet all of the incoming
coeds. A freshman tea was held during homecoming at
which time all of the members, old and new, were weI·
comed formally. Another similar tea was given in
February.
Athletics were injected into the women's undertakings
this year by Elaine Garber, who led the formation of a
girls' basketball team and a girls' volley ball squad.
Getting some competent assistance from some of the
male student body, the WSA sponsored a variety show
in late March, which included singing, dancing, comedy,
hypnotics, and refreshments. Arline Sugar was chairman of the event. Because it was a hilarious and entertaining affair which was well attended, the women have decided to make it an annual part of their activities.

An alumnae dinner, with Harriette Patak as chairman,
was held in April, to conclude the WSA scholastic year.
Beverly Meredith, president; Ann Mattern, vice president; Betty Gede, secretary·treasurer; and Bernadette
Huber, chairman of the alumnae list, were the WSA
officers. Mrs. Florence C. Wilmer was the organization's faculty adviser.
